British epidemiologist Tim Spector explained in an interview with The Telegraph that coffee offers multiple health benefits. He recalled that in the 1980s, coffee was associated with cardiovascular risks, an idea now dismissed by scientific research. Recent studies show that coffee drinkers have a 15% lower risk of heart disease. Both decaffeinated and regular varieties provide beneficial compounds to the body.
A boost for the gut microbiota
Spector highlighted that a cup of filtered coffee provides 1.5 grams of soluble fiber, which helps feed gut microbes. This is equivalent to eating a tangerine and is essential for digestive balance. He literally stated that “coffee drinkers have a more diverse gut microbiome than non-coffee drinkers,” an advantage linked to better overall health. In particular, he mentioned the abundance of Lawsonibacter, a bacterium that thrives on this fiber.
Polyphenols as the key to its effect
The specialist pointed out that coffee is a major source of polyphenols, antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Although milk may lower their concentration, the beverage remains a gut ally. As a fermented product, it also provides probiotics and complex flavors that enhance its nutritional value.
For this reason, Spector considers coffee one of the healthiest drinks, along with green tea and matcha. Coffee consumption has been linked to greater focus, improved mood, and more energy in the short term. In the long term, various studies associate it with a reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as a lower incidence of liver and breast cancers.
According to Spector, the most advisable amount is between two and four cups per day, adjusted to each individual's needs. In short, coffee is a comprehensive ally for both physical and mental well-being.
